How much does it cost to hire a lawyer?

Personal Injury and Workers’ Compensation cases are handled on contingency. This means you pay nothing upfront; attorney fees are deducted as a percentage of the total recovery, capped at 33.3% by Michigan Court Rules.

Which court will my case go to?

Jurisdiction depends on the type of case and the money involved.

District Court handles minor civil disputes (property damage, injury) up to $25k.
Circuit Court handles civil disputes over $25k.

Every county in the Upper Peninsula sits within a specific Circuit Court judicial court, which your attorney can advise on during consultation.

Do I need an attorney located in the county where I live?

No, your attorney’s office does not need to be in the same county where you live, or even the same county where your case will be heard.
